UKRAINE’S pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych, is under mounting pressure to reverse last week’s decision to turn his back on the EU in favour of closer ties with the Kremlin.
In an echo of the orange revolution of 2004, organisers are expecting thousands of demonstrators to take to the streets of the capital, Kiev, today to protest against their government’s surrender to Moscow’s bullying.
“We think this government is stalling our future,” said Vadym Sklyovov, a student. “It’s our choice to join Europe and not go towards Russia, to get away from centuries of being slaves.”
